Obverse description The State arms of the Soviet Union — a globe displaying a hammer and sickle surmounted by a rising sun and framed by wheat sheaves bound with ribbons — occupies the upper field. Below the arms, the legend СССР is inscribed in large Cyrillic characters across the centre of the coin. The denomination 5 РУБЛЕЙ appears in two lines in the lower field, with the date 1991 in the exergue. A small mark indicating the palladium fineness and the Leningrad Mint monogram ЛМД are present in the left field beneath the arms.
