The Azerbaijan SSR declared independence from the collapsing Transcaucasian Democratic Federative Republic in May 1918, then fell to Bolshevik forces in April 1920. This note dates from that transitional moment — issued by the new Soviet authority almost immediately after the Red Army seized Baku, before Moscow had consolidated a unified currency policy for the Transcaucasus.
The S-prefix in the Pick reference reflects its status as a local Soviet issue rather than a RSFSR emission. These early Transcaucasian Soviet notes were superseded quickly and circulated briefly, making used survivors proportionally uncommon relative to surviving uncirculated stock, much of which was simply never distributed before replacement.
