Malaysia hosted the 15th Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur and Seremban in August 1989, the second time the country had staged the event. Bank Negara issued this piece as a circulating commemorative — copper-plated zinc rather than a precious metal proof — which meant it entered general commerce and survivors in undamaged condition are harder to locate than mintage figures alone suggest. The plating on this composition is notoriously vulnerable to edge knocks and humidity, both abundant in equatorial circulation.
