Issued to coincide with Malaysia's contribution to the WWF's global conservation campaign, this coin was part of a broader series that Bank Negara produced through the early 1990s targeting endangered species endemic to the peninsula and Borneo. Tin brass was a deliberate choice for the commemorative run — Malaysia was then one of the world's leading tin producers, and the alloy carried an implicit national statement about the metal's domestic relevance as production was already entering long-term decline.
