Additional information

This issue spans the years immediately following the 1953 coup that restored Mohammad Reza Shah to the throne after Prime Minister Mosaddegh's nationalization of Iranian oil triggered a CIA- and MI6-backed intervention. Bank Markazi itself was only established in 1960, replacing the British-founded Imperial Bank of Persia as the sole authority over Iranian currency — coins dated before 1960 in this series were issued under transitional arrangements preceding the central bank's formal creation.
