Obverse description The Portuguese royal arms displayed on a crowned shield occupying the central field. The shield bears the traditional quinas arrangement of five escutcheons charged with bezants, surrounded by a bordure of castles, all surmounted by an open royal crown. The circular legend reading MARIA . II . . DEI . GRATIA is distributed around the periphery, with decorative star-shaped ornaments serving as punctuation marks between the legend elements.
