| Obverse description | At center, the Roman numeral V flanked by stylized floral ornaments and the date 1799, all enclosed within a beaded inner circle surmounted by a royal crown. The surrounding legend reads MARIA.I.D.G.P.ET.BRASILIÆ.REGINA, attributing the issue to Queen Maria I of Portugal and Brazil. The design is executed in low relief, characteristic of the small-type coinage struck at the Lisbon Mint for colonial circulation in Brazil. |
