Obverse description Central field bears the Royal Coat of Arms of Portugal, depicting a crowned shield quartered with castles and bezants, enclosing an inescutcheon charged with five roundels in saltire. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown. The legend 'INDIA PORTUG:' is inscribed in the field, divided to either side of the arms, reading vertically. The date 1871 appears in the exergue below the shield. The coin is bordered by a continuous beaded rim.
