Obverse description The obverse displays the Portuguese Royal Arms at center: a quartered shield bearing the five quinas of Portugal and the seven castles of the Algarve, surrounded by an ornate baroque cartouche with scrollwork supporters. The entire achievement is surmounted by the royal crown of Portugal. The circular legend reading LUDOVICUS I DEI GRATIA runs along the periphery, interrupted by small six-pointed star stops, all within a finely beaded border.
