Obverse description The obverse bears the royal legend IOANNES . V DEI.GRATIA disposed around the periphery in Latin script, identifying João V as king by divine grace. At the centre, the crowned Portuguese coat of arms is prominently displayed, featuring the traditional escutcheon with the five quinas and the border of castles, surmounted by an ornate royal crown. The field is plain, and the milled edge frames the design with a characteristic beaded or reeded border.

Reverse description The reverse features the large Roman numeral V denoting the denomination, centrally placed within an encircling wreath of laurel and fruiting branches tied at the base. The date appears below the numeral V within the wreath. The peripheral legend PORTUGALIÆ. ET.ALGARBIORUM.REX, affirming João V's title as King of Portugal and the Algarves, runs along the outer border, separated by stops. The overall design is bold and deeply struck, consistent with the milled copper coinage of the Joanine period.
