Obverse description A spread-winged Imperial eagle is depicted at center, facing left, rendered in fine detail with feathered plumage. The date 1935 is split to either side of the eagle's body, with '19' to the left and '35' to the right. The circular legend 'DEUTSCHES REICH' arcs above in Gothic blackletter script, while the denomination '5 REICHSMARK' appears in the lower field, also in Gothic script. Two swastika symbols flank the lower portion of the eagle. The word 'PROBE' (pattern) appears in small letters in the lower exergue.
