| Obverse description | A stylized German imperial eagle with spread wings is depicted in high relief at the centre of the field, its head turned to the right. The word 'Probe' (meaning 'pattern' or 'trial') appears in Gothic script across the lower body of the eagle, clearly identifying this as a pattern strike. The circular legend 'DEUTSCHES·REICH' curves along the upper periphery within a beaded border, while 'FÜNF·REICHSMARK' arcs along the lower periphery. Oak branches flank the eagle on either side, and the entire design is contained within a fine beaded inner border. |

The 1932 chrome-steel pattern coinage was part of a Weimar-era experiment to reduce the silver content — and therefore the cost — of the Reichsmark series as the Depression drained government reserves. Chrome steel was one of several industrial alloys tested that year, none of which entered circulation. The republic that commissioned these trials would be dissolved within months.
