Brazil's 2016 Olympic program generated one of the largest commemorative coin series in modern mint history — over 16 individual silver issues tied to specific sports and native fauna pairings. The cycling piece was coupled with the golden lion tamarin (Leontopithecus rosalia), a primate endemic to the Atlantic Forest of Rio de Janeiro state that had been reduced to fewer than 200 wild individuals by the 1970s before intensive captive breeding and reintroduction programs stabilized the population.
The tamarin's selection was not incidental — Rio's organizing committee deliberately matched threatened native species to Olympic events as a conservation messaging strategy.
