| Reverse description | A bold, close-up artistic composition featuring two African lions rendered face-to-face across the full field, their eyes and muzzles depicted in finely detailed high relief with meticulously engraved fur texture. A central circular medallion device, raised and inscribed with the denomination legend around its circumference and the weight specification within, occupies the centre of the design. A small bee privy mark appears on the lion's cheek to the right of the central device. |

The Big Five series has run long enough that the South African Mint is now into its third iteration, a fact that says more about bullion market demand than about numismatic innovation. The African Lion entry in this third round was struck at Centurion, where the SA Mint has operated since relocating from Pretoria in 1892 — technically the same institution, considerably different infrastructure.
KM#797 assigns this a catalog identity, though most of these move through the silver bullion channel rather than collector circuits.
