The South African Reserve Bank was established in 1921, making it one of the oldest central banks on the continent and the first in sub-Saharan Africa. Its founding followed recommendations from the 1920 De Kock Commission, which argued that South Africa's post-World War I economy required an independent institution to manage currency and credit rather than leaving those functions fragmented among commercial banks.
The 90th anniversary issue was struck at the South African Mint in Pretoria under the Reserve Bank's own commemorative program.
