| Obverse description | Purple on orange and green underprint, with a central vignette of a cargo ship at left and quetzal birds flanking both sides of the design within an elaborate guilloche border. The note is printed in intaglio with denomination numerals and bank title set against a multicolour underprint. |

| Reverse description | Printed entirely in violet, the reverse centres on an intaglio vignette of a resplendent quetzal bird perched atop a classical column pedestal, flanked by ornate guilloche rosettes enclosing the Roman numeral V at left and the Arabic numeral 5 at right. The bank title arches across the top within a scalloped border, with the denomination legend set in a cartouche at the foot of the central vignette, and the printer's imprint reading "WATERLOW & SONS LIMITED, LONDRES" appearing in small type at lower centre. |
