| Obverse description | At centre, a finely detailed imperial crown rendered in high relief, set within a concentric ornate border of beaded and scalloped rings. The circular legend 'GOVERNMENT ASSAY OFFICE' arcs around the upper field, with 'ADELAIDE.' along the lower periphery, all separated by rosette stops. The date '1852' appears in the field below the crown, with the engraver's signature 'J. PAYNE' inscribed immediately beneath. The entire design is enclosed by a bold outer beaded rim. |
