| Obverse description | Left-facing veiled bust of Queen Victoria wearing the small imperial state crown, a widow's veil falling behind, and elaborate robes with a pearl drop pendant at the décolletage, as modelled by Joseph Edgar Boehm for the Jubilee coinage. The queen is depicted wearing a pearl necklace and drop earring, with fine drapery detail across the shoulder. The circumferential legend reads VICTORIA D:G: BRITT: REG: F:D: in raised Latin letters, separated by raised dots, running from lower left to upper right around the effigy. The field is smooth and deeply struck, with fine denticulation along the rim. This second or 'Jubilee' portrait replaced the earlier young head design and appeared on all British gold coinage from 1887. |
