Reverse description The central design depicts a stylised scene of the Suez Canal, dominated by a large merchant vessel with tall masts sailing through the waterway, rendered in bold relief. To the left of the ship a radiant sun motif is visible, while to the right a grain stalk or crane element frames the composition. A laurel branch curves along the right side of the inner field. The commemorative Arabic legend encircles the left and lower portions of the design within the inner border, recording the date December 1980 and the third anniversary of the reopening of the Suez Canal.

Additional information

Egypt issued this coin to mark the formal reopening of the Suez Canal in June 1975, following its closure during the October War of 1973. The canal had been shut since the Six-Day War of 1967 — a total of eight years — and its reopening under Sadat was engineered as much for political symbolism as for the considerable revenue the waterway generates. The 1981 date reflects the issue year rather than the commemorated event, a common practice in Egyptian commemorative series of this period.
