| Obverse description | The obverse is centred on a finely engraved intaglio vignette of a classical female figure seated before a maritime harbour scene with sailing vessels. The bank title 'Stockton on Tees Bank' runs across the top in ornate copperplate script, with an elaborately bordered guilloche medallion carrying the bank monogram to the upper left and the denomination 'FIVE' to the upper right. The lower portion carries the promise-to-pay clause, the place of issue 'STOCKTON', the manuscript date, and the authorising signature for Jonathan Backhouse & Company, with 'Five Pounds' rendered in bold script at the foot. |
