Obverse description Central field bears the denomination in Arabic script (خمسة جنيهات, Five Pounds) in two lines, flanked by the Hijri date 1396 at left and the Gregorian date 1976 at right in large Arabic numerals. The circular legend around the periphery reads 'Arab Republic of Egypt' (جمهورية مصر العربية) in Arabic script. A decorative ornamental device appears at the bottom of the field. The entire design is rendered in relief against a plain field within a reeded border.

Reverse description A detailed panoramic scene commemorating the reopening of the Suez Canal dominates the field. A radiant sun rises above a canal waterway through which a large cargo vessel passes, with a navigation globe at right. To the left, a domed government building flanked by an olive branch is depicted in fine relief. An oval cartouche at the bottom of the scene contains the date and inscription in Arabic. The Arabic commemorative legend curves along the upper periphery, reading 'Jubilee of the Reopening of the Suez Canal, June 5, 1975.'
