| Reverse description | A dynamic stylised design by Claire Aldridge depicting a cyclist in motion, rendered in a bold graphic manner and integrated with a large numeral '1' dominating the field, signifying one year remaining until the 2012 London Olympic Games. The composition combines contemporary design aesthetics with Olympic symbolism. The legend COUNTDOWN 2011 appears along with the London 2012 branding and the XXX OLYMPIAD designation. The engraver's initials CA appear within the design. |

Issued as the first in the Royal Mint's countdown series leading to London 2012, this piedfort was struck three years before the previous British Summer Olympics host year of 1948 — a gap of 64 years that made London only the second city to host the Games twice. The piedfort format, double the thickness of a standard crown, has been a Royal Mint specialty since the 1980s revival of the French medieval practice.
