Additional information

Issued as the first in the Royal Mint's countdown series leading to London 2012, this piedfort was struck three years before the previous British Summer Olympics host year of 1948 — a gap of 64 years that made London only the second city to host the Games twice. The piedfort format, double the thickness of a standard crown, has been a Royal Mint specialty since the 1980s revival of the French medieval practice.
