Additional information

Guernsey was the only British territory to fall under German occupation during the Second World War, a five-year period running from June 1940 to May 1945 during which the island operated under Nazi civilian administration. The occupiers confiscated livestock, requisitioned properties, and deported a portion of the population to internment camps on the continent. Liberation came on 9 May 1945 — a date still observed as a public holiday in the Bailiwick — when HMS Bulldog entered St. Peter Port harbour.

The 2005 issue marks the sixtieth anniversary of that event.
