Reverse description The reverse features a dual-panel composition commemorating Charles Davis Lucas, the first recipient of the Victoria Cross. On the left panel, an engraved scene depicts a naval rating in the act of hurling a live shell overboard from the deck of HMS Hecla during the 1854 bombardment of Bomarsund, with a seagull in flight above. On the right panel, a bearded portrait bust of Lucas in naval uniform is shown, with the Victoria Cross medal rendered in detail at the lower centre of the field. The legend CHARLES DAVIS LUCAS arcs along the upper left and BOMARSUND · 1854 along the upper right, with FOR VALOUR inscribed within a rectangular cartouche at the top centre.
