| Obverse description | Right-facing crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II after the third portrait by Raphael David Maklouf, depicting the Queen wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara and a pearl necklace with drop earring. The truncation of the neck is cleanly cut. The legend ELIZABETH II is inscribed along the left arc of the field, with ALDERNEY along the right arc, all in raised Latin lettering against a deeply mirrored proof field. |

Alderney issued this piece to mark the total solar eclipse of 11 August 1999, whose path of totality crossed directly over the Channel Islands — one of the few populated parts of the British Isles to experience totality, with the island lying almost perfectly centered in the shadow's track. The event drew tens of thousands of visitors to the island despite persistent cloud cover that frustrated most observers on the day itself.
