Obverse description The right-facing portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in intaglio occupies the right portion of the note against a fine guilloche underprint in teal and pink. To the left, the Arms of Gibraltar — a red castle above a golden key on a white shield — appear in full colour beneath the date "1ST JULY 1995" and above a vignette of the Moorish Castle gateway. The heading "Government of Gibraltar" is rendered in ornate script at the top, with the denomination "FIVE POUNDS STERLING" in bold lettering at centre, accompanied by the signature of the Financial and Development Secretary.

Reverse description The reverse presents a central vignette of the Moorish Castle, a historic fortification on the Rock of Gibraltar, rendered in detailed intaglio engraving. To the right of the castle stands a portrait of Tariq ibn Ziyad, the Muslim Umayyad commander who led the conquest of Visigothic Hispania in 711–718 A.D. and consolidated his forces at the Rock that now bears his name. The composition is set against a multicolour guilloche underprint with the denomination and issuer's name incorporated into the design.
