Alderney has used its issuing authority liberally since the 1990s to produce commemorative pieces with no circulation obligation, and this 2012 State Opening issue is squarely in that tradition. The coin marks the first State Opening of Parliament following the formation of the Coalition Government — an event that drew unusual attention given the political circumstances of a hung parliament resolved by formal coalition agreement, only the second such arrangement in post-war British history.
The KM reference duplication (234a and 225) likely reflects a cataloguing overlap between the base metal and silver variants of this commemorative program.
