The Royal Albert Hall opened in March 1871, a project that nearly bankrupted its organizers and required a controversial scheme selling 999 "seats in perpetuity" to cover construction debts — some of those seatholding rights remain in private hands today. The 2021 issue marks the building's 150th anniversary.
The Royal Mint released this as part of a broader commemorative program that year, with the proof striking utilizing standard .925 blanks shared across much of the commemorative five-pound range.
