Additional information

Reginald Mitchell died in 1937 at 42, just months after watching his Supermarine Spitfire fly for the first time. He never knew what it would become. This Jersey issue appeared in 2008 as part of a broader wave of British commemoratives marking figures associated with the Battle of Britain and wartime aviation — a genre that had grown crowded by the late 2000s, with the Royal Mint and various Crown Dependencies competing for the same collector market.

Jersey's issues from this period were struck by the Pobjoy Mint under contract.
