Issued to mark the centenary of Queen Victoria's death in January 1901, this piece appeared during a period when British Crown Dependencies were producing commemorative five-pound coins at a pace that tested collector appetite. Guernsey had relatively limited independent coinage history before the modern commemorative era, making these issues more products of the Royal Mint's client minting operations than expressions of distinct local monetary tradition.
KM#106 is copper-nickel rather than the silver piedfort variants sometimes offered alongside such issues — the base metal version was the mass-market release, struck in quantity for the general collector market rather than for circulation.
