| Obverse description | The fourth definitive effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II faces right, engraved by Ian Rank-Broadley, depicted crowned and wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara. The sovereign's portrait is rendered in high relief befitting the piedfort format, with fine detail in the drapery and regalia. The peripheral legend reads ELIZABETH·II D·G·REG·F·D around the upper field, with the denomination FIVE POUNDS completing the inscription. |

The Queen's 80th birthday in 2006 prompted the Royal Mint to issue commemoratives across several formats, but the platinum piedfort was produced in an edition of just 150 pieces — almost certainly the smallest mintage of any modern British commemorative struck in that metal. At nearly 95 grams of .9995 platinum, the production cost alone placed these well beyond conventional collecting budgets even at issue price.
