Issued to mark the Queen Mother's 99th and 100th birthdays across two years, this small-format gold piece is one of several struck by Crown Dependencies exploiting their mint autonomy to produce commemorative bullion outside Royal Mint purview. Guernsey, Jersey, and the Isle of Man competed aggressively in this market through the late 1990s. The Queen Mother lived to 101, dying in March 2002 — meaning pieces dated 2000 were already in collectors' hands before her centenary year had fully closed.
