Alderney's commemorative program has long served as a vehicle for British royal themes that wouldn't find a place on mainstream UK coinage. This 2006 issue marks the wartime childhoods of the two princesses during the German occupation of the Channel Islands — a period when Alderney itself was entirely evacuated, its civilian population removed to the British mainland in June 1940 before German forces arrived.
Alderney remains the only British territory to have been completely depopulated during the occupation.
