Alderney, the smallest of the inhabited Channel Islands with a population under 2,500, has operated an aggressive commemorative coin program since the 1990s, issuing pieces under its own name despite using the pound sterling and holding no independent monetary authority. This 2006 piece falls within a broader series marking the centenary of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, whose association with locomotive engineering reached its peak with the broad-gauge Great Western Railway — a 7-foot gauge system he championed against the ultimately victorious Stephenson standard, abolished by Act of Parliament in 1892.
