Obverse lettering ELIZABETH II·D·G·REG·F·D·5 POUNDS·2016· J.C
(Translation: Elizabeth the Second by the Grace of God Queen Defender of the Faith)
Reverse description Four British infantrymen in full First World War kit — steel helmets, puttees, full packs, and rifles — march wearily across a devastated battlefield, rendered in high relief against a backdrop of billowing shell smoke and barbed wire strewn ground. In the upper field, a verse from Rupert Brooke's poem 'The Soldier' is inscribed in period-style serif lettering: 'There shall be / In that rich earth / a richer dust / concealed.' Along the lower exergual arc, the inscription '1914 THE FIRST WORLD WAR 1918' frames the composition, with the engraver's initials 'DL' visible in the lower right field.
