| Obverse description | Right-facing draped bust of Queen Elizabeth II, wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara and a pearl drop earring with a pearl necklace, as rendered by engraver Raphael David Maklouf. The effigy is presented in high relief against a deeply mirrored proof field. The legend ELIZABETH II arcs along the left periphery, while GIBRALTAR and the date 2005 arc along the right periphery, all in raised Latin characters. Pierre-Charles Villeneuve commanded the Franco-Spanish fleet at Trafalgar in October 1805 and was captured by the British following the battle. The coin's release in 2005 marked the bicentenary of Trafalgar — a politically delicate anniversary that prompted France to decline participation in the international naval review held off Portsmouth, the French government unwilling to formally commemorate a defeat of that magnitude.
Villeneuve died in Rennes in April 1806, officially ruled a suicide by six stab wounds to the chest.
