Reverse description A detailed depiction of an early Metropolitan Railway steam locomotive numbered 23, rendered in a three-quarter frontal perspective and occupying the central and lower fields of the coin. Steam billows dramatically from the funnel and sides of the engine, evoking the atmospheric conditions of the original underground line. Superimposed across the upper portion of the field is a stylised London Underground route diagram rendered in violet enamel with two station roundel indicators in white and black, referencing the Metropolitan line map. The designer's initials GBD appear discreetly at lower right, and the commemorative legend 1863-2013 METROPOLITAN LINE is inscribed around the upper periphery.
