Reverse description The reverse, designed by David Rowlands, features a three-quarter length figure of a merchant mariner in period working dress standing at a ship's wheel in the left foreground, with a British Red Ensign flag billowing above to the right. Behind the figure, a steam-powered merchant vessel is depicted underway on rough seas, its funnels emitting smoke. The inscription 1914 THE FIRST WORLD WAR 1918 arcs around the upper field between two raised dots, and MERCHANT NAVY is engraved in bold relief within a recessed band along the lower periphery. The engraver's initials DR appear in the lower right of the inner field.
