| Reverse description | Against a deeply darkened field, large Gothic-script lettering spells JOHS DE across the upper portion of the reverse, reproducing the opening words of King John's seal inscription as found on the Magna Carta. To the left stands a sword and crown rendered in selective gold ink, symbolising royal authority. Below the Gothic lettering, the inscription MAGNA CARTA appears in Roman capitals, with the denomination £5 displayed in the lower field. The combination of selective gold colouring and Gothic calligraphy evokes the 800th anniversary of the sealing of the Magna Carta in 1215. |
