| Additional information |
John Jellicoe commanded the Grand Fleet at Jutland in May 1916 — the largest naval battle in history by tonnage engaged — and left the field having lost more ships than the Germans. Churchill's double-edged verdict that Jellicoe was "the only man on either side who could lose the war in an afternoon" has followed his reputation ever since, obscuring a defensible tactical record. Guernsey's connection to Jellicoe is genealogical: he was born in Southampton but claimed Channel Island descent, giving the bailiwick a plausible hook for the commemorative.
