Additional information

Alderney has issued commemorative five-pound pieces under Crown Dependency authority since the 1990s, contracting production almost exclusively through the Pobjoy Mint. This James I piece was part of a broader series commemorating the monarchs of Great Britain — a commercially driven program rather than one prompted by any political or historical occasion.

James I's accession in 1603 united the English and Scottish crowns under one sovereign for the first time, a union Alderney had no constitutional role in — which makes the choice of subject purely a collector market decision.
