Issued to mark fifty years of Elizabeth II's reign, this piece was struck at a moment when the Golden Jubilee itself was genuinely uncertain to be celebrated at all — both Princess Margaret and the Queen Mother died within weeks of each other in February and March 2002, raising serious questions about whether public festivities would proceed. They did, though in a subdued register that colored the entire commemorative program.
The five-pound gold proof is the heaviest denomination in the standard Jubilee collector series, struck to the traditional crown-sized specification maintained by the Royal Mint since the nineteenth century.
