The Kentfield signature variant of the Stephenson £5 is distinguished by a lighter-weight "5" numeral printed at the upper left of the obverse — a subtle but cataloguable difference from the earlier Gill-signed issues. The change occurred during the note's production run at Debden rather than representing a redesign, which is why both signatures can appear with either numeral weight depending on print batch.
Roger Withington's engraving work on this series is among the finer examples of intaglio portraiture produced by the Bank of England's in-house facility during the period.
