Additional information

Jersey issued a series of commemorative crowns in 2005 marking the 60th anniversary of liberation from German occupation, which had lasted from July 1940 until May 9, 1945 — a date still observed on the island as Liberation Day, a public holiday. The evacuee theme is specific to Jersey's wartime experience: before the occupation began, British authorities ordered the voluntary evacuation of children and some adults to the mainland, separating thousands of Jersey families for the duration of the war.

Roughly a quarter of Jersey's pre-war population left before German forces arrived. Their return in 1945 was complicated by housing shortages and the psychological strain of five years apart.
