Additional information

Alderney, the smallest of the three inhabited Channel Islands with its own administration, has operated an aggressive commemorative coin program since the 1990s — issuing pieces under Crown dependency status that bear legal tender face values almost no one would ever spend. This 2007 piece honors Edward I, whose connection to the Channel Islands was largely administrative: his reign consolidated English control over the islands after the French crown's claim lapsed following the loss of Normandy under King John in 1204.

Edward I also introduced the landmark currency reform of 1279, which recoined the entire English silver stock and established the groat and halfpenny as standard denominations.
