Jersey issued this piece to mark Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee — sixty years on the throne, the second British monarch to reach that milestone after Victoria. As a Crown Dependency, Jersey holds a distinct relationship with the Crown that is neither part of the United Kingdom nor a colony, and jubilee issues from the Bailiwick carry their own independent authority rather than coordinating with the Royal Mint.
Gold-plated copper-nickel crowns of this type were struck in very large quantities for the collector and gift market, with actual circulation virtually nil from the outset.
