Reverse description The reverse depicts a finely detailed Avro Lancaster bomber in low-level flight, shown from a three-quarter frontal angle as it skims over the top of a breached dam with water cascading through the destroyed structure below. Explosion bursts and debris appear in the upper field, evoking the drama of the famous 617 Squadron raid of May 1943. The inscription DAMBUSTERS RAID / 1943 is placed in the upper central field, with the curved legend HISTORY OF THE ROYAL AIR FORCE running along the upper periphery and FIVE POUNDS across the lower border.
