Additional information

Guernsey's position in this subject is not incidental. The island was occupied by German forces from June 1940 until May 1945 — the only British territory to fall under Nazi administration during the war — making it the sole part of the Crown Dependencies with a direct, lived experience of the occupation that D-Day ultimately ended. The liberation came not with the landings themselves in June 1944, but nearly a year later, after the German garrison surrendered following the general armistice.
