Additional information

Guernsey's position in this subject matter is not incidental. The island was occupied by German forces from June 1940 until May 1945 — the only British territory to fall under Nazi occupation — making it one of the few places in the Crown Dependencies with direct, lived experience of the regime the D-Day landings were mounted to defeat. The liberation of Guernsey came nearly a year after the Normandy invasion itself, on May 9, 1945, now observed as Liberation Day and a public holiday on the island.
