Alderney occupied a peculiar position on June 6, 1944 — it was the only British territory still under German occupation when the landings took place, and would remain so until May 1945. Its inhabitants had been evacuated in 1940 and returned to find the island extensively fortified, with a higher density of German military construction per square mile than almost anywhere else in the Channel Islands.
The KM#244 issue is one of dozens of D-Day commemoratives produced for the collector market in 2014, the 70th anniversary year.
